Gang hideouts can produce some of the larger free-roam gunfights in Red Dead Redemption 2. Charging directly into a camp may work against a few enemies, but larger hideouts are much easier to clear when you use cover, identify enemy positions, and control how many opponents can attack Arthur at once.

A careful approach also reduces the amount of ammunition and healing supplies you need.

Scout the Hideout Before Shooting
Do not fire immediately when you first spot enemies.

Stay outside the main camp and examine the area. Look for buildings, wagons, rocks, fences, elevated positions, and other objects that can provide cover.

More importantly, identify where enemies are concentrated.

If most enemies are standing inside the camp, approaching from an open central entrance may expose Arthur to several guns simultaneously.

Look for a route that allows you to fight from the edge.

Start From Reliable Cover
Your opening position can determine how difficult the entire fight becomes.

Choose solid cover before firing the first shot. Rocks, thick walls, and other large objects are generally more useful than standing behind something that leaves most of Arthur exposed.

Once combat starts, allow enemies to move toward you.

This can turn a large group into smaller waves instead of forcing Arthur to fight everyone in the center of the hideout.

Eliminate Dangerous Targets First
Not every enemy creates the same level of threat.

Once the shooting begins, prioritize opponents who have clear firing angles or are attempting to flank your position.

Dead Eye can help remove several priority targets quickly, but do not waste the entire meter on enemies who are already poorly positioned.

Watch the Minimap for Flanking Enemies
Focusing entirely on enemies directly ahead of Arthur is an easy way to get surrounded.

Check the minimap regularly.

If an enemy begins moving around your side, deal with that threat before continuing to fire at distant targets. Moving to new cover may also be necessary if several enemies are approaching from different directions.

Do not remain attached to one position simply because it was useful at the beginning of the fight.

Push Into the Hideout Gradually
After eliminating the first group, do not immediately sprint into the center.

Move from one piece of cover to another and check your surroundings.

A controlled advance might look like:

Outer Cover ? Clear Enemies ? Reload ? Move Forward ? Find New Cover ? Clear Next Area

This gives you time to reload weapons and recover before triggering additional pressure.

Search the Area After Combat
Once the hideout is clear, do not immediately ride away.

Search useful locations around the camp and loot defeated enemies where appropriate. Buildings and containers may contain supplies or other items that make the encounter more rewarding.

Before leaving, also check your ammunition and weapon condition, particularly if the fight required a large number of shots.

Prepare Before Attacking Another Hideout
If you plan to clear multiple hostile locations, reset your supplies between fights.

Check:

Health and Dead Eye
Ammunition
Weapon condition
Tonics
Horse supplies

Beginning another large gunfight with depleted resources can make an otherwise manageable encounter unnecessarily difficult.

Final Thoughts
Clearing gang hideouts in Red Dead Redemption 2 is much easier when you control the fight from the outside instead of rushing into the middle of the camp.

Scout enemy positions, start from strong cover, stop flanking attempts, and advance gradually. With good positioning, Arthur can handle large groups without turning every hideout into a chaotic close-range shootout.
