RALEIGH, N.C. – A haunting 150-year-old photo initiate in a North Carolina attic shows a juvenile swart child named John, barefoot and wearing ragged clothes, perched on a barrel next to another anonymous callow boy.
Knack historians believe it's an exceptionally rare Civil War-era photograph of children who were either slaves at the but or recently emancipated.
The photo, which may partake of been infatuated in the at 1860s, was a testament to a dark portion of American history, said Intent Stapp, a precise historian and founding curator of the Jingoistic Picture Gallery's photographs bureau at the Smithsonian Institution.
"It's a altogether difficult and sorrowful piece of American telling," he said. "What you are looking at when you look at this photo are two boys who were victims of that history."
